Limited disability access due to old stone staircase

Further information on Medieval Guildford

Measuring some thirty feet by nineteen, the Undercroft has a rib-vaulted ceiling supported by two central columns. The corbels - the brackets where the arches spring from the walls - are carved in the shape of grotesque faces. By the stair, for example, is one carved in the shape of the head of a woman wearing the folded headcloth, or wimple, in the style fashionable in the late 1200s.

The ceiling is above street level giving room for a doorway and steps down from the street. The doorway is on the downhill side to gain the maximum headroom. On the uphill side was a low window which afforded a little daylight. Near the far corner in the uphill wall is a narrow doorway which once led to a spiral stair to the house above. The house would have been timber framed and nothing of this has survived.

Undercrofts like these were mostly built in the 1200s and the early 1300s. They were used as shops: the extensive stonework and the carvings were intended for display and not merely as an embellishment to a cellar or storeroom. The undercroft arrangement meant that a short flight of steps up from the street could lead to another shop thus effectively doubling the street frontage.

The merchant who lived in the house above, might have used the undercroft himself or possibly sublet it as a separate shop, as is known to have happened in London and elsewhere.

There is another very similar undercroft beneath the Angel Hotel across the High Street in Guildford. This is rather misleadingly called ‘The Crypt’, for true crypts are only found under churches. There is no truth in the popular tale that a secret tunnel links the two undercrofts. In fact, there are traces of perhaps as many as half a dozen undercrofts that once existed along the High Street, a testimony to the great wealth of Guildford in the Middle Ages. Only a rich merchant could afford such expensive masonry work.

Throughout England undercrofts are associated with towns that were engaged with profitable import and export trade, such as Chester, Winchelsea and Southampton.

In Guildford the major industry during the Middle Ages was the export of a coarse blue cloth called kersey to all parts of Europe. There is nothing which positively links the Guildford undercroft with the wool trade. On the other hand it is likely that there was some connection, either directly with cloth dealing or indirectly with the import of luxury goods, like wine, attracted by the cloth dealer's wealth.

Since the Middle Ages, the Undercroft has been used simply for storage and for much of the present century has stood empty. In 1989, work was carried out to open the long-blocked street entrance and refurbish the interior for use as an Information Centre for visitors to the town. This has been achieved with very little alteration to the medieval structure and so now, once again, the Undercroft is playing an important part in the town's commercial life, looking very much as it did when it was built 700 years ago.

Contact Guildford Museum: 01483 444750
";mylan["1071hsVoucher1"]='';mylan["1107hsName1"]="MWB Business Exchange";mylan["1107hssubTitle1"]="";mylan["1107hsDesc1"]="
Stylish and dedicated meeting and training rooms in professional business surroundings, next to both Guildford station and Farnham Road car park.

With flexible seating configurations, you don't have to worry about equipment, catering, making sure the room is set up or even registration of your delegates - we'll organise it all for you. A painter, plantsman and brilliantly gifted and imaginative designer, he dedicated his creative genius to the layout and composition of a landscape garden which was unique in Europe and still remains so. Hamilton was educated at Westminster and Oxford, where he formed a lifelong friendship with Stephen and Henry Fox, wealthy sons and heirs of Sir Stephen Fox. Hamilton joined two Grand Tour's of Europe, first in 1725 with Stephen Fox and later in 1732 with Henry Fox, that cultivated his great interest in the arts.

In 1738, Hamilton began to acquire the land at Painshill which over the years built up to over 250 acres. Painshill was created as a romantic landscape to stimulate the senses and emotions of the visitor. Hamilton was in the vanguard of the picturesque movement. The gardens were divided into two parts; the ornamental pleasure grounds to the south, with the lake as the central feature, and an adjoining crescent of open parkland to the north in a free and natural style. The gardens were among the earliest to reflect the changing fashion from geometric formality to the naturalistic style. Painshill was also very much a garden of 'mood' which changed from one part of the grounds to another. Hamilton eventually ran out of money and sold the estate in 1773.

Until the outbreak of World War II it was held by a series of private owners, all of whom cherished their possession.

The main decay started in 1948 after the sale by the Coombe family to the Baroness de Veauce, who split up the estate, separating the mansion from the park, and sold it in separate lots. Some of the park's original features were still to be found in 1981, when the Trust was formed, though obscured by years of neglect.

Rescuing and restoring this exceptional Grade I landscape, has been very challenging and difficult but ultimately exceedingly rewarding, capped with the award of the rare Europa Nostra Medal in 1998 “for the exemplary restoration from a state of extreme neglect, of a most important 18th century landscape park and its extraordinary buildings”. Painshill Park is of international importance and therefore The Painshill Park Trust now has a long-term aim to become a world heritage site.

In May 2006, Painshill was awarded full collection status for the John Bartram Heritage Collection by the National Council for the Conservation of Plants and Gardens (NCCPG). Our collection is the first National Plant Collection of its type that the NCCPG has ever awarded and will now be used as a standard to judge other similar heritage collections.
?
If you love nature, enjoy history and are looking for a great family day out, come and discover the magnificent landscape of Painshill Park
?
A Living Work of Art
Painshill is a living work of Art, created by a painter and brilliantly gifted designer in the 18th century.
