Major discoveries were made, including the fact that the keep was built in two phases.
The conservation works revealed early 12th century crenellations at a lower level in the keep wall than its full height. Henry III made it one of the most luxurious royal residences in England but in later years the castle was allowed to fall into disrepair.

';mylan["1039hsName1"]="Guildford Castle";mylan["1039hssubTitle1"]="";mylan["1039hsDesc1"]="It is thought that William the Conqueror ordered a castle to be built at Guildford soon after 1066. The huge square tower keep was constructed as a residence and as a refuge against attack in the mid-1100s following the mound or motte which would have been built first. However, Guildford Castle saw little military action and became more important as a centre for local government.
As the only royal castle in Surrey it became, in the 13th century, the headquarters of the sheriff, who ran the county in the king's name. In particular he was responsible for the organising trials for serious crimes and the keep became the county jail not only for Surrey but also for Sussex.
When the royal family came to the castle, they stayed in the palace buildings in the bailey. Of this once-grand royal residence, only the gateway and a few ruins survive.The Great Tower is now open after extensive renovation, including new floors and a roof which has made the building more accessible to visitors.
The Tower contains a model of the original castle, circa 1300, and interpretation panels tracing its history to the present day. There is a visitor platform on the roof offering panoramic views of Guildford.

Designed by Sir Edward Maufe building commenced in 1936 and the Cathedral was finally consecrated in 1961.
The Cathedral is built with bricks made from clay dug from Stag Hill itself. To help fund the construction people could buy individual bricks for half a crown, you can still see the bricks bought and signed by members of the Royal family.
The tower is 160ft hight and contains 12 bells from the same foundry that made Big Ben.
Admission is free and additional facilies include a Gift and Book shop and restaurant, a large car park and coach park is availalbe with free parking for visitors. Full facilities are available for disabled guests.
The Cathedral is easily accessible via the A3 or a 15 minutes walk from Guildford train station.
With its imposing setting on Stag Hill to the west of the Town Centre (with easy access from the A3 By-pass), Guildford Cathedral is an impressive modern brick building which was completed and consecrated in 1961.?

And some of the fascinating history….
The Royal Oak was built in the 15th Century and was originally a single building, with the adjoining properties in the row, known as Hall House. The building was owned by the Church but was sold off along with other Church properties to fund the rebuilding and restoration of Holy Trinity Church, in particular the spire of the Church which had collapsed, and was replaced by the Tower you can see from the Royal Oak now. The building was split in the 17th Century into 4 separate properties. The sale of the properties resulted in Trinity Churchyard becoming a hive of industry which included a blacksmith, vet, fuller (pulling wool which has come from newly sheared sheep), vintner, saddler, greengrocer and grocer to name but a few.
Now though all these properties are private dwellings, offices or meeting halls. The Royal Oak of course is a pub and has been for about 200 years!
